INVITATION

With the visit of Mr. Kirk Herbertson (expert with International Rivers, Bangkok) Finland Futures Research Centre Mekong group invites to a mini-seminar:

Large-scale Dams and Energy Development in the Mekong Region
Monday, April 2nd, from 10.00 - 11.30 am.
The event will be held at Finland Futures Offices in Tampere, Pinninkatu 47, (enter building through Varastokatu), 3rd floor.

After welcoming words by Dr. Jyrki Luukkanen (FFRC) our expert guest from Bangkok, Mr. Kirk Herbertson from the NGO International Rivers will deliver a talk on Dam development in the Mekong region, focusing on the Anatomy of the Mainstream Xayaburi dam. This dam has been projected to have dramatic ecological and social consequences in addition to creating electricity for Thailand and export revenue for Laos. There will be plenty of room for questions, comments and discussion in relation to the future energy development in the region at large.

The event is open to all, but we request prior register by March 30th to: otto.bruun@utu.fi

Mr. Kirk Herbertson works for International Rivers' Southeast Asia program to support the people and ecosystems of the mainstream Mekong River, a key organization of the Save the Mekong campaign. Prior to joining International Rivers, he worked for five years at the World Resources Institute, an environmental policy organization in Washington, DC. As a human rights lawyer, he has promoted stronger respect for the rights of local communities affected by the investments of international financial institutions, multinational companies, and Chinese state-owned enterprises. This has included helping to lead civil society efforts that resulted in the adoption of a free, prior, informed consent policy for indigenous peoples, as well as stronger consideration of international human rights at the International Finance Corporation. Mr. Herbertson received his law degree and Master of Arts in international politics from American University, and his Bachelor of Arts degree from Carleton College.
