Les Chants de Maldororinin ajatus antoi alkusysäyksen Riia Leistin taiteelliseen työskentelyyn. Se mitä vuoden 2012 aikana on syntynyt on nyt esillä HIRVITALOSSA. Näyttely sukeltaa alitajuntaan, teoksissa tutkitaan sattumaa: tuottaako kontrolloimaton ja satunnaisuus sivutuloksena jonkinlaista järjestelmää? Kykeneekö ihminen hahmottamaan vain sellaisen maailman, jossa on järjestystä? Ovatko tiedostomattomat valinnat sittenkään täysin satunnaisia?
Sukellus -näyttely tuo Hirvitaloon uusia tilateoksia ja taidevalaisimia vuoden 2012 ajalta. Näyttelyssä on
myös kolme tärkeää teosta vuodelta 2011, uusien teosten alullepanijat Äiti, Neiti ja Votakka. Näyttelyn nimikkoteos Sukellus syntyi juuri ennen näyttelyä. Teoksen muoto on harkittu, mutta sen pinta on työstetty sattumanvaraisesti eri värisillä klemmarihelmiyhdistelmillä. Monotonisesti toisiinsa liitettyjen pienten osasten satunnaisesta yhdistelmästä on syntynyt jotain uutta ja ainutlaatuista. Voit todeta onko pinta
sattumaa vai järjestelmää? Alitajunnaisten teosten lisäksi näyttelyssä on esillä hulvattomia osittain surrealistisia hahmoja joiden asut ovat toteutettavissa myös oikeiksi asusteiksi, asuiksi. Näyttelyssä on myös kaksi henkilökohtaisesti tärkeää teosta: teos josta Riia Leistin 2 vuotias poika totesi ensimmäisen kerran nähtyään: ” nieno ” ( hieno ) sekä teos jonka hänen Äiti nähtyään purskahti nauruun ja totesi: ” tuo on jännä ”. Reaktiot olivat niin odottamattomia, että päätin ottaa teokset mukaan sellaisenaan.
Sukellus -näyttelyn teosten materiaaleina ovat tutut massatuotteet: pillit, paperiliittimet, nippusiteet ja
patapadat. Uusina materiaaleina mukaan ovat tulleet muoviset kertakäyttökäsineet, kangaskorit, muovihelmet, pinnit, narut ja marjaverkot. Materiaalien hyödyntämistä rajoittaa vain mielikuvitus.
Aiemmin Riia Leistin teoksia on ollut esillä yksityis- ja yhteisnäyttelyissä, sisä- ja ulkotiloissa, Suomessa ja
ulkomailla. Niitä on ostettu yksityisiin koteihin ja julkisiin tiloihin. Tämän kesän ja syksyn aikana teoksia on ollut esillä Lahden taidemuseon Metamorfoosi `12 -näyttelyssä sekä Arjen aarteet - Muotoilun minimaailma näyttelyssä Helsingissä. Syksyn aikana teoksia nähdään Hirvitalon lisäksi vielä Teatteri Frenckelin lämpiössä Tampereella. Ensimmäinen kansainvälinen yksityisnäyttely on tavoitteena vuosien 2013-2014 aikana.
Vuoden 2012 ajan olen työskennellyt Pirkanmaan taidetoimikunnan vuosiapurahalla.

The Plunge
Riia Leisti's (maiden name Paasonen) solo exhibition
in Hirvitalo, Center of Contemporary Art Pispala, 13.10.-4.11.2012
”As beautiful as the casual encounter of an umbrella and sewing machine in midst of an autopsy” Les Chants de Maldoror
The previous idea from Les Chants de Maldoror gave an impetus to Riia Leisti's artistic efforts during the current year. The result of her creative work is now at display in Hirvitalo. The exhibition can be characterised as a plunge into the unconscious that seeks to study the role chance plays in
artistic creation. Is order an inevitable result of seemingly uncontrolled and ramdom process, or is the perceived order created by the human mind in its effort to understand the world? Should an unsconcious choice be equalled with random choice?
The exhibition fills Hirvitalo with pieces of art and unique lampshades created in 2012. In addition to these three essential works of art from 2011, namely Mother, Miss and Votakka (translates roughly as Jezebel), are included in the exhibition. These three paved the way to the new direction Riia Leisti's art has taken. The piece of art carrying exhibition's name was completed shortly before the opening night. Even thought the shape of the piece is carefully considered, the surface does not follow any plan. On the contrary, the goal has been to produce it as randomly as possible. And yet, it seems that the monotonous compination
of randomly chosen paper-clips produces something unique and new. Even more strikingly, an impression of orderliness. It is left to the viewer to decide whether the surface comes across as orderly or incidental. Some works of art have provoked unexpected reactions from family members. A piece of art was spontaneously characterised by Riia Leisti's two-year-old son as ”Great” while her mother defined another work as ”neat and exciting” before bursting out in cheerful laughter.
The works of art presented in the Plunge are made of familiar mass products, including for example, plastic straws, paper-clips, cable ties and pata-pata sponges, Riia Leisti has used as raw material for her art previously. But this is not all, recently she has been experimenting with baskets, plastic expendable gloves, different kinds of fabrics, pins and strings.
Previously Riia Leisti's art has been at display in galleries and outdoors, in Finland as abroad. During the summer she participated, as part of the World Design Capital, to two exhibitions in Helsinki and Lahti. Her first international solo exhibitions is scheduled to 2013.
The artist is thankful to the Pirkanmaan taidetoimikunta that has allowed her to advance her art on a full time basis during the year 2012.

REITTI
Kertomus reitiltä: maasta, alkuperästä, kodista.
Reitti on omaperäinen kysymys alkuperästä. Siellä Konstantina Achilleoksen veistokset ovat löytäneet sopivan pysähdyspaikan matkallensa: Kotilo, perunarinki ja kirjenaru julistavat identiteettinsä eminkään maan kansalaisina.
Achilleoksen näyttely pysähtyy seuraavaksi syksyisen Hirvitalon, Pispalan nykytaiteen keskuksen pihalle lokakuun 13. päivästä marraskuun 4. päivään asti. Näyttely viihtyy avoimissa tiloissa gallerian sijaan, kutsuen ohikulkijat luokseen. Esillä olevat teokset kertovat etnisestä alkuperästä muuttuvana käsitteenä, kulttuurien vuorovaikutuksista kautta aikojen. Orgaaniset puu- ja tekstiiliveistokset ovat hitaan ja fyysisen työn tuloksia.
Kulttuurin alkuperä ja alkuperäiskulttuuri
Teosten maanläheinen muotokieli kertoo perimmäisestä: jokaisen identiteetti koostuu opituista tottumuksista ja tarinoista jotka hän kuulee elämän matkan aikana. Ihmisen koti on hänen tekemä reitti: hänessä on itsessään kaikki mitä tarvitaan elämän jäsentämiseen. Matkaa tehdessä joutuu määrittelemään alkuperänsä usein, jolloin huomaa eri kulttuurien välisiä samankaltaisuuksia. Se asia jota luuli omaksi erikoispiirteeksi, onkin yhteistä monelle kansalle.
”Taide yrittää tuoda esiin sen, mikä on elämässä tärkeintä, ja sen ydin on sama joka puolella maailmaa.”
Näillä sanoilla taiteilija viittaa teostensa monikulttuuriseen tulkintaan: suomalaisen arjen tärkeä symboli, peruna, on yllättäen monen muunkin maan perus-symboli (esim. Ranska, Kanada, Kypros, Peru jne.) Tämä huomio vahvistuu primitiivisen taiteen tutkimuksessa, jossa kansojen liike näkyy selvästi löydetyissä kalliopiirroksissa: vene-aihe esiintyy samanlaisena karjalan kalliopiirroksista Lähi-itään saakka. Achilleos lainaa omassa tekemisen teoriassa esihistoriallisen taiteen peruspiirteitä.
Konstantina Achilleos (s.1989, Kypros) asuu Turussa. Hän valmistuu kuvataiteilijaksi pääaineenaan kuvanveisto Turun AMK:n Taideakatemiasta syksyllä 2012. Kaksoiskansalaisuus ja usean maan välissä työskentely ovat tuoneet ajankohtaiseksi työaiheeksi etnisen identiteetin muuttuvana käsitteenä.
Taiteilija on tavattavissa näyttelyn avajaisten yhteydessä 13.10.2012 kello 18.00 alkaen. Tavoitettavissa myös näyttelyn pystytyksessä 12.10.2012.

A trail. The story from a voyage; land, origin, home.
Reitti (Finnish for route) is a question about origin; where Achilleos’ sculptures have found themselves an apposite rest stop: a shell, a potato ring and hanging letters proclaim their identities as citizens of no nation.
The next stop of this voyage is the garden of the Hirvitalo, Center of Contemporary Art Pispala 13.10-4.11.2012. These sculptures feel at home in open spaces instead of galleries, inviting passers-by to hang around with them. These organic wood and textile sculptures, a result of slow physical work; they describe origin as a transforming concept as an extension to the interplay of cultures through time.
Origin of culture and indigenous cultures
The earthy idiom of these works tells of basic values: one’s identity is made of learned habits and tales heard during the journey of life. Man’s home is his trail. During a trip one often finds himself trying to define his origin, only to realise the similarities between cultures; when what was considered to be the peculiarity of one’s own culture is proven to be a commonality for many peoples.
”Art tries to reveal what is important in life, and its core is the same everywhere on earth.”
With these words the artist refers to the multicultural signs behind her works: the potato, an important part of Finnish everyday, is surprisingly the basic symbol of many nations e.g. France, Canada, Cyprus, Peru etc. This observation is verified in primitive art research, the movement of human can be seen on findings of different tribes. The same subjects, like the Boat, appear very similar from Karelia’s cave drawing all the way to the Middle-East. In the theory of her work Achilleos borrows fundamental characteristics from prehistoric art.
Konstantina Achilleos (born 1989, Cyprus) lives in Turku. She will graduate from the Arts Academy of the Turku University of Applied Sciences in Autumn 2012, with the Fine Arts specialisation, sculpture. The topic of ethnic identity as a fluid concept, emerged from her dual nationality and working between several countries.
