Panelistit: L.M. Bogad, professori Riitta Pohjola-Skarp (Teatterin ja draaman tutkimus, TaY), professori Tere Vadén (Taiteen laitos, Aalto-yliopisto), professori ja tutkimusjohtaja Tuomo Melasuo (Rauhan- ja konfliktintutkimuskeskus TAPRI, TaY) ja professori Mikko Lehtonen (Mediakulttuuri, TaY).

The Postscenium of Revolutions:
an afternoon uprising for performing the political

Monday 12 Nov 2012 @ 14-17; Tampere Congress and Culture Centre Puistotorni/KONSU Concert Hall; Hämeenpuisto 28 (3. floor), Tampere

There is something revolutionary at the heart of performing, and vice versa. But what are the performative aspects of revolutions - implicit in the representations, reports and artistic reactions they generate - and what is the revolutionary status of political performing/performers in the current world (dis)order? To rise against the consensual silence surrounding these questions, the School of Communication, Media and Theatre at the University of Tampere has the pleasure of hosting a guest lecture by Professor L.M. Bogad (Univ. Of California, Davis), a known performer and academic in the field of political, oppositional and activist performance. The lecture is followed by an interdisciplinary panel discussion on the above topics.

TO STOP THE SUN FROM SETTING, TO HOLD BACK THE SEA WITH YOUR HANDS: REVOLUTIONARY PERFORMANCE FROM TAHRIR TO OCCUPY OAKLAND

In this presentation, Professor Bogad will discuss the role of performance in the Egyptian Revolution from his admittedly limited perspective working with political performance artists in Cairo and facilitating workshops for five weeks immediately after Mubarak´s resignation. He will also discuss the role of performance, for better or worse, in the efforts of the Occupy movement in the United States, focusing on Oakland. He will explore more broadly the role of performance in social movement organizing, his concept of the irresistible image, achieving tactical surprise through performance, proactivity versus reactivity in artistic activism, creative suffering and strategic dramaturgy.

Panelists of the ensuing discussion:
L.M. Bogad, Professor Riitta Pohjola-Skarp (Theatre and drama research, Univ. Of Tampere), Professor Tere Vadén (The Department of Art, Aalto University), Professor Tuomo Melasuo (Research director of TAPRI-Tampere Peace Research Institute, Univ. Of Tampere) and Professor Mikko Lehtonen (Media Culture, Univ. Of Tampere). The panel takes place at 15.30-17 in the mentioned venue.

Professor Bogad writes, performs, and strategizes with mischievous artists such as the Yes Men, Agit-Pop, and La Pocha Nostra. He is a veteran of the Lincoln Center Theatre Director's Laboratory, and a co-founder of the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army. As a theatre professor at the University of California at Davis, he teaches classes such as Satire, Irony and Protest, Tactical Performance, and Oppositional Performance and Social Movements.
Bogad`s plays have covered topics such as the Egyptian revolution, the Haymarket Square Riot, the FBI's COINTELPRO activities, the Pinochet coup in Chile, and global climate chaos. He has led Tactical Performance workshops, helping activists create performative, nonviolent images to contest and critique power, in revolutionary Cairo, Reykyavik, Buenos Aires, across the USA and Europe, for the Center for Victims of Torture, as the "Humanities and Political Conflict" Fellow at Arizona State University and at Carnegie Mellon University both as an "Art and Controversy" Fellow, and as a Distinguished Lecturer on Performance and Politics. http://lmbogad.com
