LINNUT - Marjatta Heinonen

TAUSTAAMME:

Olen opiskellut mm.

BIRDS - Marjatta Heinonen

As the destruction of the environment takes place at an ever greater speed, it affects everyone, everything around the globe, the universe,

that is why I have chosen the vanishing rainforest's colourful beautiful parrot and birds in general as my subject.

We must remember to look further than our own native country, because the same problems are found everywhere and we can do something to help the situation.

Our deeds here at home also affect the rainforests and their inhabitants, making us all responsible for everything that occurs there.

My Birds also counterbalance my husband Paul's forest-drawings which are centering attention for the most part on Finnish nature.

TREES - Paul Semenoff

Drawings and paintings of trees. 20 - 30 pieces on paper and canvas.

An on site painting to be made on paper during the course of the exhibition (3 weeks).

The subject of the painting (size determined by wall adjacent to window) will be a landscape, the view from the second story window.

Trees are everywhere and we sometimes don't see them. They are living, growing and providing people and all creatures with shelter, food, and spiritual sustenance.

I hope, through my drawings and paintings, to assist the viewer grow a more conscious appreciation of trees.

ABOUT OUR BACKGROUND:

I have studied Fine Arts, Fibre Art and Theatrical Costume design. I have designed costumes for ballet and musical theatre in Canada.

While doing on the job training at Vienna Bundestheaterverband, one New Year's eve, I stepped out of the Costume Shop's door while everyone inside was celebrating the year's change with champagne and Sacher Torte.

There, on the street, at my feet, a beggar was drawing an image of a horse on the bare pavement, fingers stiff from cold. This experience impressed me greatly and began to smolder, I began to look, see the world with different eyes. I had already for some time had been debating with myself whether the artificial world of artificial lights and super expensive productions or a cabin in the midst of a forest where I could paint and draw were the place for me. It was then that the answer started finding form.

As the years moved along the greater world changed into village of Länkipohja and my
drawing and painting began to take place in a wood-heated home studio. For many years I also designed and made the costumes for the Orivesi Fairytale Theatre.

For me this was my dream come true,

and for my husband Paul it was like a homecoming, because he grew up in the mountains of British Columbia in Canada in a tiny village without electricity.

He has also studied Fine Arts and done his life work in teaching English and Art in English for the past 32 years in Finland.

Your chosen theme really touched us deeply, I had just recently been playing with the idea of how Art, Artists, Galleries could, can and are taking the initiative in pointing the way to a more gentle, simpler way of life closer to and in harmony with nature.
