Workshop: Theatre of the Oppressed and Solidarity
Facilitated by Luc Opdebeeck (Netherlands)

Sat 29th September 2012 10:00 - 17:00, Laurea Tikkurila, Ratatie 22, Vantaa, workshop room B 403

The workshop will be held in English.

Solidarity is a crucial ingredient in the process of developing a Theatre of the Oppressed troupe in any community. It is needed between the Joker and the actors; amongst the actors themselves; and between the actors and the audience. Solidarity makes it possible for the troupe to create theatre projects that carry transformative power and lead to concrete and ethical actions.

Theatre of the Oppressed and Solidarity workshop will zoom in on how the Dutch theatre organization Formaat - Workplace for Participatory Drama (Rotterdam) works on social change with marginalised communities, and offer a deeper understanding on the importance of maintaining solidarity when working with Participatory Drama techniques.

The workshop will be facilitated by Luc Opdebeeck, one of the co-founders of Formaat (www.formaat.org). Luc Opdebeeck has trained people in Theatre of the Oppressed and other Participatory Drama techniques in the Netherlands and all over the world since the early 1990’s. He has a vast experience in working with various groups of people such as children, homeless people, prisoners and people with learning disabilities.
