Huom! Pispalan nykytaiteen keskus Hirvitalon avointa näyttelyhakua vuodelle 2023 on jatkettu 28.1. asti.

Näyttelyhaun teemana on Rihmasto – Coming together. Teema on tarkoitettu suuntaviivoiksi ja inspiraatioksi hakuun. Haluamme pitää haun mahdollisimman avoimena ja hakemukset voivat siksi pohjautua myös muihin aiheisiin. Haku on avoinna 28.1.2023 asti, ja nyt haettavat näyttelyajat sijoittuvat helmi-maaliskuusta joulukuuhun 2023. Haun tarkat ohjeet löytyvät tekstin lopusta.

Näyttelyhaun teema

Näyttelyvuoden 2023 teeman Rihmasto – Coming together kautta tuomme esiin ja yhdistämme toisiinsa kaksi termiä. Rihmaston monitasoista käsitettä oli vaikea kääntää englanniksi ja Coming together kääntyi kömpelösti suomeksi. Halusimme liittää otsikkoon molemmat termit, ja tehdä samalla näkyväksi, miten annamme yhtä paljon arvoa niin paikallisille kuin kansainvälisillekin hakijoille.

Luonnossa sana rihmasto tarkoittaa sienen osaa, joka levittäytyy maan alla tai muussa orgaanisessa materiaalissa säiemäisinä haarautuvina rihmoina. Rihmastot ovat hienovaraisia ja ohikulkijalle näkymättömiin jääviä kokonaisuuksia, joiden merkitys on kuitenkin monissa ekosysteemeissä olennaisen tärkeä. Metsässä sienirihmastoja löytyy kaikkialta, ja muut lajit ovat niistä joko suoraan tai välillisesti riippuvaisia. Uudessa tutkimuksessa on selvinnyt, että rihmastoissa kulkevat sähköimpulssit ovat monimutkaista viestintää, johon sisältyy ihmiskieltä ja sanoja muistuttavia piirteitä. Näyttelyteemana rihmaston voi nähdä metaforana siitä, miten luonnossa kaikki liittyy yhteen ja toimii yhtenä ekosysteeminä. Pienikin ihmisen aiheuttama muutos voi vaikuttaa herkkään tasapainoon. Ihminen on riippuvainen luonnosta, mutta mitä me annamme sille? Osaammeko muuta kuin käyttää luontoa hyödyksemme? Miten luonnosta voisi oppia ja miten voisimme edistää ekologisesti  kestävää kehitystä ja vastuullisuutta? 

Rihmasto voi kuvata myös ihmisten välisiä, virallisen kerronnan ja päätöksenteon taakse näkymättömiin jääviä siteitä, yhteyksiä ja rakenteita, joiden kautta tiedot ja taidot leviävät yhteisöissä. Toinen merkitys rihmastolle voivat olla ihmisjoukkoa tunnetasolla yhdistävät siteet, kuten välittäminen, myötätunto ja solidaarisuus, jotka tekevät joukosta vahvan – yhteisön. Sienirihmastot levittäytyvät maan alla välittämättä valtioiden rajoista. Samoin ihmiset voivat muodostaa vahvoja verkostoja niin lähelle kuin kauas, tarvittaessa nykyteknologiaa hyödyntäen.

Coming together – yhteen tuleminen tai kokoontuminen – tuo kuvaan mukaan hieman vastakkaisen, mutta samaa aihetta syventävän termin. Rihmasto levittäytyy ja kuljettaa informaatiota, näkymättömissä yhdistäen, coming together kokoaa konkreettisesti yhteen. Hirvitalolla saman katon tai keskustelun alle, saman pöydän tai jaettujen kokemusten äärelle, samaan puutarhaan. Vuoden 2023 näyttelyhaussa myös Hirvitalon piha ja puutarha ovat käytössä teos- ja ohjelmaehdotuksille. 

Teeman valinnassa tiedostamme ajankohtaisen tilanteen, jossa puhe erilaisista käynnissä olevista tai lähestyvistä kriiseistä on arkipäivää. Ihmisten eriytyessä yhä enemmän omiin tiedollisiin kupliinsa, näemme tärkeänä kokoontumisen yhteen taiteen sekä yhteisen tekemisen ja jakamisen äärelle, muodostamaan yhteistä todellisuutta keskustelun ja läsnäolon kautta. Hyvinkin erilaisten maailmankuvien on mahdollista kohdata eri näkökulmille ja kannanotoille avoimessa turvallisessa tilassa, ja samalla voi syntyä jotakin uutta. 

Näyttelyhaun teemat ovat hakijoiden vapaasti tulkittavissa. Koska haluamme pitää näyttelyhaun mahdollisimman avoimena, haussa ehdotettu näyttely voi pohjautua myös muihin aiheisiin. 

Hakuohjeet

Hirvitalolla on kolme näyttelyhuonetta: alakerrassa yksi 16m² huone ja yläkerrassa kaksi 12m² huonetta. Näyttelyajat ovat kestoltaan kolme viikkoa. Näyttelyn lisäksi ehdotukseen voi kuulua samalle ajalle myös muuta näyttelyyn liittyvää ohjelmaa tai taidepainotteisia prosesseja, kuten työpajoja, performansseja tai videonäytöksiä. Hirvitalon puutarhaa ja pihaa sekä esiintymislavaa on mahdollista käyttää ehdotuksissa näyttely- ja tapahtumatilana erityisesti kesäaikaan.

Näyttelyaika on maksuton. Näyttelynpitäjälle (yksilö tai ryhmä) maksetaan kulukorvaus, jonka suuruus selviää myöhemmin. 

Lähetä vapaamuotoinen hakemus Hirvitalon sähköpostiin hirvitalo.archive (a) gmail.com 28.1.2023 klo 24 mennessä otsikolla “Näyttelyhaku 2023”. Hakemuksessa tulee olla seuraavat tiedot:

-Näyttelysuunnitelma (sisältäen haetko yhtä huonetta, yläkerran kahta huonetta vai koko tilaa)

-Kuvia teoksista 5–10 kpl (videoista linkki)

-CV(-t)

Näyttelyt valitsee PNTK-Hirvitalon vaihtuva näyttelytyöryhmä. Työryhmän tavoitteena on varmistaa erilaisten teosten esille pääsy sekä laadukas ja mielenkiintoinen näyttelykalenteri koko vuodelle. Näyttelyiden valinnassa huomioimme kulttuurisen moninaisuuden.

Näyttelyiden ripustus tapahtuu tiistaista perjantaihin ja avajaisia vietetään lauantaina. Näyttelyn purkaminen alkaa viimeisenä päivänä eli sunnuntaina gallerian mentyä kiinni ja jatkuu maanantain ajan. Avajaispäivänä talolla järjestetään jokalauantaiseen tapaan perinteinen Hirvitalon kansankeittiö, jossa on tarjolla vegaanista ruokaa 3–10€ hintaan. Lisäksi lauantaisin järjestetään usein esityksiä, konsertteja ja muuta esittävää taidetta. Näyttelynpitäjät saavat halutessaan myös tarjota ohjelmaa avajaisiin tai suunnitella avajaistensa ohjelman.

Please note: Pispala Centre of Contemporary Art – Hirvitalo’s Open Call for exhibitions 2023 has been extended until january 28th.

The theme for Hirvitalo Call for Exhibitions 2023 is Rihmasto – Coming together. The title is meant as a guideline and inspiration for applicants, and submissions based on subjects outside the theme will also be accepted. Submission deadline is January 28th 2023. The exhibition times available range from between March and December 2023. Detailed instructions for applying can be found at the end of this text.

The Call for exhibitions’ theme

With the 2023 theme Rihmasto – Coming together we combine two terms and concepts. The multiple meanings of the Finnish word Rihmasto (rhizome, or most commonly ’mycelium network’) were difficult to translate into English, and Coming together also seemed to lack something when translated into Finnish. We wanted to use both of these terms, and at the same time make visible how we give equal value to both local and international applicants.

In nature the word rihmasto (mycelium network) means the part of a fungus that spreads underground or in other organic material. The networks are subtle and mostly invisible to an outside observer, yet their importance for ecosystems is essential. In the forest, fungal mycelia are found everywhere, and other species are either directly or indirectly dependent on them. A new study has found that the electrical impulses travelling in mycelium are complex communication that includes features similar to human language and words. https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsos.211926

As an exhibition theme Rihmasto can be seen as a metaphor for how everything in nature is connected and works as one in the ecosystem. Even a small change caused by humans can affect that delicate balance. We are part of nature and dependent on it, but what do we give back? Are we capable of anything but exploiting nature? How could we learn from nature and nourish responsibility and sustainable development?

Rihmasto can also represent the connections and structures that remain unseen behind official narratives and decision-making, but through which for example skills and knowledge are conveyed within communities. Another meaning for rihmasto could be the emotional bonds between people, like caring, empathy and solidarity, that make a group of people stronger –  a community. The mycelium network spreads underground regardless of government borders. In the same way people can form strong networks far and near, with or without modern technologies.

Coming together brings in another term that is slightly opposite, but at the same time deepens the theme. Rihmasto spreads out and delivers information, invisibly uniting. Coming together concretely gathers people together – under the same roof or conversation, around the same table or shared experiences, or into the same garden. In the 2023 call for exhibitions, the Hirvitalo yard and garden are also open for artwork and program suggestions.

In choosing the theme we acknowledge the present situation, with frequent talk of ongoing or approaching crises. As society’s different social and political bubbles become more polarized, we see it as important to gather together around art, sharing, and joint activities, to form a common reality through conversation and presence. Even significantly different worldviews can come together in a safe space that is open for different perspectives and positions. At the same time something new can be born.

The theme of the call for 2023 can be interpreted freely. To keep the call open to as many approaches as possible, the submissions can also be based on subjects outside the theme.

Instructions for submission

Applications may be submitted for an individual artist, a group of artists/collective, or a curated exhibition of artists.

Hirvitalo has three exhibition rooms: one 16m² room downstairs and two 12m² rooms upstairs. Artists may apply for a three week exhibition period. You may also suggest program or art-oriented processes related to and during the time of your exhibition, for example workshops, performances or video projections. The garden, the yard and a performing stage outside are available for the purposes of event and exhibition suggestions, especially in the summertime. 

The exhibition period is free of cahrge. Pispala Centre of Contemporary Art will pay a small compensation for the exhibition costs for each exhibiting artist or group based on delivered receipts. The amount of the compensation will be announced later.

Send a free-form application to Hirvitalo’s email hirvitalo.archive (at) gmail.com by midnight January 28th 2023 with a title “Näyttelyhaku 2023 – Call for exhibitions”. The application must include the following information:

-Plan of exhibition (including whether you apply for one room, two upstairs rooms or the whole space)

-5–10 images from the works (or a link to the video)

-CV(s)

The exhibitions will be chosen by PCCA-Hirvitalo’s exhibition workgroup. The aim of the workgroup is to ensure exposure for a diverse range of artworks as well as an intriguing exhibition calendar for the entire year. In choosing exhibitions we pay attention to cultural diversity.

The hanging time for exhibitions is from Tuesday to Friday. Openings are on Saturdays. Dismantling of the exhibition starts on the last Sunday after the gallery is closed and continues until Monday evening. On the opening day, the usual Saturday folk kitchen takes place, which serves vegan food for 3–10€. In addition, performing arts, concerts or other performances are organised from time to time on Saturdays. The exhibiting artists are also welcome to suggest and provide content for the opening day’s program, or plan the program of the opening day themselves.
