Tunneköyhä yhteiskunta on täysin harmaantunut ja lamaantunut. Ihmisistä on tullut aattetonta suorittavaa kansaa – toistensa perässä kulkijoita – välinpitämätöntä silmänsä sulkevaa massaa. Kuvitteellinen joukko on vaatinut mielenosoituksella empatiaa.

Mitä on ihmisyys, myötätunto, empatia, jakaminen? Mitä on ne yhteisölliset taidot, joihin ihmiset pitkälle kehittyneillä aivoillaan pystyvät? Mitä on se pehmeys joka on vastakohtana yleisesti vallitsevalle ihmisten itsekkyydelle ja raa’alle maailmalle?

Mielenosoituksen banderollit, kyltit ja julisteet on koottu Hirvitalolle installaation muotoon. Tule katsomaan, mitä mielenosoituksesta on jäänyt jäljelle ja kokeilemaan, miltä tuntuu olla jonkun toisen kengissä – Kädellisten heimossa!

Työpari Lepus timidus – Anu Nirkko ja Heli Hamid ovat rakentaneet installaation Pispalan nykytaiteen keskukseen Hirvitalolle. He aloittivat yhteistyön ympäristötaiteen ja installaatioiden muodossa vuonna 2021. Heidän ensimmäiset teoksensa liittyivät metsäjänikseen jota etsittiin Helsingin Keskuspuistosta ja tästä työparin nimi Lepus timiduskin juontaa juurensa. Näyttelyä koostaessaan he ovat miettineet ihmisen käsitettä ja siitä syntyi näyttelyn nimi Kädellisten heimossa. Ihminen on kehittynein kädellinen laji maapallolla ja luonnostaan yhteisöllisiä.

Ihmisyys on inhimillisyyttä, humaanisuutta, ihmisystävyyttä.
Ihminen on ainutlaatuinen laji.
Ihminen kykenee empatiaan, mutta se vaatii aktiivista toimintaa eli ei synny itsestään.

Lepus Timidus – In the Primate Tribe

This emotionless society is completely gray and paralyzed. Humans have turned into a thoughtless, performance-driven people, following one another – an indifferent crowd with their eyes closed. An imaginary crowd demands empathy with a demonstration.

What is humanity, compassion, empathy, sharing? What are the social skills that people with their highly developed brains are capable of? What is the softness that opposes the generally prevailing selfishness of the brutal world?

The banners, signs and posters of the demonstration have been assembled into an installation at Hirvitalo. Come see what’s left of the demonstration and experience what it’s like to be in someone else’s shoes – in the Primate Tribe!

Lepus timidus, made up of work partners Anu Nirkko and Heli Hamid, have built an installation at Pispala’s Contemporary Art Center Hirvitalo. They started working together in the form of environmental art and installations in 2021. Their first works were related to the wild hare that was being searched for in the Helsinki Central Park, and this is where the name of the working couple, Lepus timidus, comes from. While putting together the exhibition, they thought about the concept of a human being, and that is how the exhibition got its name: In the Tribe of Primates. Humans are the most advanced primate species on Earth and are communal by nature.

To be human is humanity, humaneness, human friendship.
Humans are a unique species.
Humans are capable of empathy, but it requires active action; it does not arise by itself.
