Community radio project in Oaxaca, Mexico ("pasa la voz")

Umbrella organization for local radios in Finland (Kansan radioliitto) has a development co-operation project in Oaxaca during 2008-2010. Idea for the project dates back to 2007, when Mexican human right activist and zapoteco Diego Cruz Martinez was visiting Finnish Social Forum. He told about the uprising, that exploded in Oaxaca in 2006, about the role of media and radios within the conflict and about the situation of indigenous communities in Mexico. Finnish activist within the NGO for local radios decided to apply for funding for a project, that would support community radios in Oaxaca. From their point of view, radios are both like a library and a school for the local people.

The idea within the project is to support and spread the already existing community radio network in Oaxaca. Training enables marginalized indigenous communities to create their own media. In the trainings individuals learn how to prepare and maintain transmitters and antenna. They are also trained how to plan the program, do the interview and use music. Communities are encouraged to discuss about the role of community radio, it's significance locally and the means through which it could serve all the community, and not only certain groups within the community. As in many of the local communities Spanish is secondary language, people are encouraged to use their own local languages and to enforce their identities as indigenous communities. Radio is specially important for the illiterate parts of the communities.
