Inspiration for ooffoo
There’s a wonderful story that has been attributed to the Native American Cherokee Indians. The story is about a boy who tells his grandfather that he is feeling very angry and upset. The grandfather explains to the boy that he too sometimes feels angry but also he often feels very happy. The grandfather says it is as if there are two wolves battling inside him. One is very angry, aggressive and acts out of fear. This wolf wants to fight all the time. The other wolf is happy, playful, and only wants to make friends and live in peace. But the two wolves are constantly battling inside. The little boy asks: which wolf wins?

And the grandfather replies: ‘the one I feed’.

This great story is so appropriate to our times. The media concentrate on the stories that make us fearful, unhappy or angry. These are the stories that sell and make the most impact. Of course bad stuff happens but lots of good stuff happens too! What if we start to feed the right wolf?

Dr. Paul MacCready, internationally renowned innovator and entrepreneur recognised the awesome ramifications of this when he said,

Suddenly we humans (a recently arrived species no longer subject to the checks and balances inherent in nature), have grown in population, technology, and intelligence to a position of terrible power: We now wield the paintbrush.”

Yet we are of the view that this does not have to make us fearful. We believe that the power of the human spirit and the collective imagination is also capable of painting a masterpiece! We just need to feed the right wolf!

We believe that each and every time conscious positive choices are made, decisions that include not only ourselves but also the benefit of others, our true and best collective self emerges. The whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts and this, we believe, gives us tremendous hope.

ooffoo has been created to help like minded people participate in this philosophy; to network, communicate, help, advise and share. We very much hope that you will find ways to let ooffoo serve you too.

'ooffoo' itself is the html code for the colour green (well, technically, the code is actually 00FF00) and we love the idea that we can create a community space on the internet where, whatever it is, without hassle and pressure or guilt, ooffoo can help us tint it green!

We hope to fund this site by low priced classified listings in the commercial section, carefully selected sponsorship of tags and the sale of our products. We don’t rely on donations. We have been supporting and promoting eco, fair trade and craft businesses for many years and this has been rewarded by our winning, by popular vote, the Observer Newspaper's Ethical award three years in a row. To date, through the promotion of fair trade and ecological goods, we have also raised over £500,000 for environmental and other organisations.

We hope that our community can benefit and find goods and services that fulfil their own ethical requirements. At the same time this enables ethical, niche, hard to find (and often very small) suppliers to market themselves and reach an audience of like minded people. All the businesses advertisng on this site have signed up to our Manifesto. They have agreed that they offer products or services that fit within the spirit of this community.
